The Similarity of Parallel Worlds, 2011. Installation-hand blow, sandblasted glass domes with two videos.

The Similarity of Parallel Worlds visually explores when viewed through a microscope a single cell can bear an unnerving similarity to the Earth’s Sun as seen through a solar telescope. They appear worlds apart and inextricably linked. Tethered to one another in such a way that causes us to question their relationship. As we further examine the science of environmental change it becomes apparent that these two worlds are more influential then their scale infers.

Research for this work has been collated with Dr Judy Callaghan at Monash Micro Imaging, Dr Alina Donea at the Monash Centre for Stellar and Planetary Astrophysics in conjunction with NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory.

I have been delighted over the past week to be woken every morning by google alerts about my bubbles being blogged about all over the world. From the UK to Nashville these little (and not so little these days) bubbles sure are getting around.

Here is a very cheeky peak at some new Bubbles I have been working on! This time the bubbles are a lot bigger and the glass is thicker, giving an optical effect just like a giant lens.

Using highly innovative materials such as NASA ’s dichroic glass, Bubbling Up examines the fragility of the Earth’s atmosphere and ecosystems that appear like a bubble, on the constant verge of collapse. Sometimes fickle and ever elusive, Bubbling Up highlights the ongoing need to quantify ecological concerns. Every day there are thousands of toxic gases bubbling up in the atmosphere. In the age of heightened ecological awareness Bubbling Up poses the question, is it possible to view a beautiful sunset and not wonder if the sky is set ablaze with such unique colours because of the toxic pollutants in the air reacting with the atmosphere? In the space that surrounds us, what is bubbling up?

Opening August 20, 2011 Bubbling Up is a pop up exhibition of new work by Jasmine Targett at dianne tanzer gallery + projects. The work explores the curious opulence of bubbles that appear simultaneously on the constant verge of expansion and collapse.

Bubbling Up is also one of Craft Victoria’s Craft Cubed Festival Satellite Events for 2011.

Taipei Bound!!

It has been a very exciting few months and I have two big news items to report!
We are heading to Taipei!!

Three new works have been curated into the exhibition Wonderland at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei in February 2012. The exhibition will showcase contemporary award-winning artists from Australia. Some of the works will be featured in my exhibition opening September 8th, Making Sense at Craft Victoria.

Bubbling Up, opening at Dianne Tanzer Gallery in late August has been curated as a part of the Craft Cubed Festival at Craft Victoria.

I am excited to announce that Life Support Systems, has been shortlisted for the Tom Malone Glass Prize!Life Support Systems, 2010
Dichroic Glass

A little about the prize: the Tom Malone Prize was initiated in 2003 by Benefactor of the Foundation of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Elizabeth Malone, and is intended to promote the creation, appreciation and enjoyment of glass made in Australia. Each year, $10,000 is awarded to the winner and the winning work then becomes part of the State Art Collection at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

In a break with Tom Malone Prize tradition, 2011 will follow 2010’s travel format and see judges travelling to meet with short-listed artists in their studios. Judging will happen by studio visit between 28 February - 5 March 2011.

My arts practice has been influenced a lot from the research I have been doing with Monash Microbiology Imaging... It has changed the way I think about the visible and what lies beyond. There is a constant sense of bubbling up beyond the surface of what we can visibly perceive.

Sometimes observation changes the way we understand the world, sometimes thinking about observation changes what we see.

on one of those hot balmy days in december, the new pieces of eight gallery opened at 28 Russell Place in the Melbourne CBD. the opening was fantastic, lots of innovative and ground breaking new work from the local creative folk. i was completely seduced by the luster of beautiful things.

A new lunar year bubbling up!

hello dear ones, i have been hibernating in my studio over summer... letting the creative vibes wash over me like waves on a beach and now comes the time to begin again. last year ended in such an intense rush that i didn't get to tell you about about all of the haps. so i will catch you up over the next few posts, there have been lots of things bubbling up under the surface......ready to just about pop!

this year there will be some crazy, big, huge, enormous creative events comin so watch this space! i will be pushing my work and my creative abilities to the max this year taking on lots of new exciting projects. who knows where the journey will take us. i am starting with two feet planted firmly on the ground, its time to get fearless and risk it all.

As many of you know at the end of 2010 Monash Uni invited me to complete my PhD, i have accepted!! So my studio base will be there for the mean time. do drop past if you should happen to be about

yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! As a part of my ongoing research project Life Support Systems, LSS: We Follow the Light has been short-listed for the 2010 Toyota Travel Award.

We Follow the Light is based around a journey to follow the path of light that the sun travels across Australia from the easternmost point (153°38' E) to the westernmost point (113°09' E) in one day.

Such exciting news! I have been very lucky to receive a 2011 Creation of New Work for an Emerging Artist Grant from the City of Melbourne. The grant will fund the creation of works for the research project Life Support Systems. Life Support Systems is based around a series of works that discuss scientific data, monitoring and imagery of the Earth's ozone and atmosphere as collated by NASAs EOS satellite. Once created, this work will be exhibited in late 2011.

So its going to be a bit quiet on the south eastern front from me for a few months chaps. I am bunkering down in the studio to get some much needed thesis writing finished and some larger scale projects underway. The National Glass Collection's National Student Art Glass Prize

2010 is proving to have unexpected delights around every corner.

Beyond the Visible has been selected by Michal Scarrone as one of the first finalist in the new National Student Art Glass Prize to be held at the National Art Glass Gallery in Wagga Wagga.

The Exhibition will be held at the National Art Glass Gallery in Wagga Wagga from 12th March - 6th June 2010.

Inside the Realm of Invisible Spheres, 2009.

’There is no logical way to the discovery of these elemental laws. There is only the way of intuition, which is helped by a feeling for the order lying behind the appearance.’ –Albert Einstein

Beyond the Visible: The duality of bubbles describes an interior sphere encased by a fragile exterior shell. Self contained, the inner and outer innately reflect one another. The modern scientific notion of binary duality argues that in order to see the reality of the exterior it must first be understood as an innate reflection of the interior. The sum of parts deconstructed, reveal a discerning view of the relationship that forms the structure of the whole.
It is the potential of innate binary duality that offers unique insight beyond the visible.

Micro – Macro, Cell – Planet, Cause – Effect, Green – Industrial, Organic – Nature Identical, Human – Inhumane, Comprehension – Ignorance, Observation > Realisation > Awareness > Perception > Discernment.

A series from the Inside the Realm of Invisible Spheres Exhibition, that worked with the notion of cells. On the microscopic level, cells apear as bubbles, floating, contained & regulated. When you zoom out and look at the shell of the cell, or rather the human from which it has come, there is a rupture- as though through magnification we are yet to fully understand the relationship between the interior and exterior, the outer and inner, the micro & macro cosmoses of the self & the universe.

Curious Opulence was my graduate installation from Honours in Fine Arts at Monash University.

The work was comprised of sculptural components exploring optically impossible and complex spaces that the modern notion of the atom quantifies. These hand blown, mirrored and dichroic glass objects were unique prism-like spherical fragments of a Baroque nature. Each fragment held a visual connection to the other alluding that they had all once belonged to a greater whole. The final installation Curious Opulence created a situation for the human eye to investigate the dissolvability of form and obscurity of perception.

Hand Blown, Cut and Polished Dichroic, Silvered and Mirrored Glass.

All components change colour depending on the position of the viewer in relation to the object. For example, in the image below, the Gold/Orange glass, shifts to a Blue, while the Blue changes to a Pink and the Violet to a Green. Depending on the surface the objects sit on, they reflect and refract light, changing colour through out the day. At night time they glow.
